HLTAID011 — Provide First Aid

This unit equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to respond to a range of common first aid situations in workplaces and community settings. Participants learn how to assess emergencies, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), manage injuries and medical conditions, and provide immediate care until professional medical assistance arrives. The training focuses on safe response, clear communication, and applying recognised first aid procedures in real-world scenarios.

What you'll learn

Emergency Recognition & Safety

  • Identify indicators of an emergency situation.
  • Select appropriate actions to ensure safety for self, bystanders, and casualty.
  • Examine the casualty for signs requiring first aid.
  • Contact emergency services for assistance.

Communication & Documentation

  • Report incident details following workplace or site procedures.
  • Communicate incident details accurately to emergency services.
  • Protect privacy and confidentiality of information according to relevant policies.
  • Complete required workplace or site documentation, including incident report forms.

Respect, Consent & Comfort

  • Request consent from the casualty before providing assistance, where possible.
  • Demonstrate respectful behaviour towards the casualty.

First Aid Response

  • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Monitor the casualty’s condition during first aid.
  • Utilise available resources and equipment to maximise casualty comfort.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following ARC guidelines.
  • Apply first aid procedures based on established principles.

Post-Incident Review & Wellbeing

  • Participate in a review of the first aid response when required.
  • Identify psychological impacts on self and other rescuers following an incident.
